Which states count homeschool hours?

Most states that set a requirement count days. Some count hours instead, or as an alternative. For example:

StateHours
Missouri1,000 hours a year; at least 600 in reading, language arts, math, social studies and science, and 400 of those 600 at the regular homeschool location
New York900 hours in grades 1–6, 990 in grades 7–12
Pennsylvania900 hours (elementary) or 990 (secondary), as an alternative to 180 days

A general guide, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state’s current rules before you rely on them.

Tips for an hours log that holds up

Let the hours add up on their own

In Homeschool Planner & Records, every lesson you check off logs its minutes, by subject and by child. Core hours and core hours at home are counted for you.

  • A lesson timer, or the planned minutes, with one tap
  • One activity split across subjects, like an hour of baking as math and science
  • A print-ready hours log for the year, a semester or a quarter
  • No account: your records stay on your phone
