How to keep a homeschool attendance log
- Mark each day you hold school. A day of lessons, a co-op day or a field trip can all be school days; check how your state defines one.
- Note the days that don’t count. Holidays, breaks and sick days stay blank or get a letter, so the total is easy to defend if anyone asks.
- Tally each month. Write the month’s count in the “Days” line, then add the twelve months at the end of the year.
- Sign and keep it. Many families keep the signed log with their portfolio or year-end records.
How many days does my state require?
It depends on the state. Some count days, some count hours, and some ask for neither. A few examples:
| State | What the law asks for |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | 180 days, or 900 hours (elementary) / 990 hours (secondary) |
| New York | The equivalent of 180 days: 900 hours in grades 1–6, 990 in grades 7–12 |
| Tennessee | 180 days of 4 hours each (independent home schools) |
| Missouri | 1,000 hours a year, 600 of them in core subjects |
| Texas | No attendance requirement |
A general guide, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state’s current rules before you rely on them.
Rather not count by hand?
Homeschool Planner & Records fills in this log as you check off each child’s lessons, and keeps the count against your state’s target.
- Attendance counts itself from the lessons you check off
- Presets for all 50 states and DC, with a pace projection
- Print the attendance log for the year, a semester or a quarter
- No account: your records stay on your phone
